A little bit of History :

Rue de la Devise gradually took shape during the Middle Ages, following the course of a stream of the same name.

To the west, before it crossed the town, it was known in the 17th and 18th centuries as the ruisseau ou estey de la Mothe. To the east, where it flows into the Garonne, it was known as ‘l'estey des Anguilles’. This was because of the small, narrow, flat-bottomed boats that entered the river and were called ‘anguilles’ (eels). With its wooden quays, it was an inland port in the Late Empire and the High Middle Ages, close to what is now Place Saint-Pierre.

The layout of the rue de la Devise differs from the east-west alignment of neighbouring roads, recalling the course of the stream. From the 17th to the 19th century, medieval and Renaissance homes were replaced by houses.
